On Wednesday, September 4th, 2024, Amity College became the epicenter of one of the most electrifying mathematics competitions in NSW: Mathscup. Now in its 15th year, this prestigious event brought together 85 teams comprising 255 Year 6 students from 38 schools across Sydney, all vying for the coveted Mathscup title.

Mathscup is not just another competition—it’s a celebration of mathematical brilliance. Designed to transform how students interact with mathematics, the event aims to inspire a deeper interest in the subject, infuse fun into learning complex concepts, and ignite a passion for solving challenging puzzles. Additionally, it fosters teamwork and sharpens problem-solving skills.

The excitement in the air was palpable, as the competition not only met but surpassed expectations. A teacher from Dural Public School shared, "My students love Mathscup. It's challenging, intense, and fun all at once. This competition is truly amazing, and I’m grateful for this incredible opportunity for primary students across Sydney."

Students were equally enthusiastic. "Mathscup is a real challenge. I haven’t faced something like this in a long time," said one participant, while another commented on how the event rekindled their enjoyment of math.

Alina Zhang, the event organizer from Amity College, reflected on the day’s success, "Mathscup is a unique competition, blending all aspects of mathematics with fun to create an exciting and challenging event. Our faculty has put in tremendous effort to make it a reality, and it’s wonderful to see it so well received. We can’t wait to host it again next year."

Adding to the thrill of the day, the winning teams walked away with valuable prizes for themselves, their teachers, and their schools, along with the prestigious Mathscup trophy.

The top honors went to:

  1. Dural Public School - Mathscup Champions
  2. Excelsior Public School - Second Place
  3. St John Park Public School - Third Place

As the day concluded, it was clear that Mathscup 2024 had not only brought out the best in every participant but had also kindled a lasting love for mathematics that will resonate far beyond the competition.
