Sydney Observatory Marks Ramadan with Art, Astronomy, and Harley Goodman’s Standout Performance
On 1 March 2025, Sydney Observatory, in collaboration with ISRA and artist Shireen Taweel, hosted a captivating evening celebrating the sighting of the new crescent moon, marking the start of Ramadan. The event combined storytelling, music, academic discussions, and celestial observation, bringing together diverse voices in a rich cultural and spiritual experience.
A standout moment of the night was the remarkable performance by Harley Goodman, whose evocative musical set deeply resonated with the audience. Performing during the Storytelling segment (6–7:30 PM) alongside the Three Rivers Ensemble, Harley’s artistry captured the essence of Ramadan, blending spiritual depth with contemporary expression.
Other highlights included talks by Professor Mehmet Ozalp and Shireen Taweel, the sighting of the new crescent moon, a communal Iftar meal, and the Maghreb, Isha, and Taraweeh prayers. Despite intermittent cloud cover, a livestream by photographer Thomas Kirkpatrick ensured attendees could witness the crescent moon’s emergence.
With its fusion of faith, art, and science, the event successfully set a reflective and inspiring tone for Ramadan, leaving a lasting impression—especially through Harley Goodman’s unforgettable performance.
