Amity x Opera House: A Stage for Storytelling

We are proud to reflect on the success of House Swap, a transformative creative learning program developed in partnership between Amity College and the Sydney Opera House. This collaboration provided a unique platform for Stage 4 students to explore personal stories through the lens of performance, culminating in a moving showcase at the iconic Utzon Room.

The journey began with weekly workshops held throughout Term 2, facilitated by renowned artists Mel Ree and Emily Galicek, and made possible through the leadership of Jenn Blake, Creative Learning Producer at the Sydney Opera House. From the outset, students were immersed in a process that encouraged risk-taking, self-expression, and artistic collaboration.

Each Tuesday, students engaged in dynamic creative exercises designed to unpack the theme of home, interrogating how place, memory, and identity shape our sense of belonging. What emerged was a devised work that was not only authentic to each student’s voice, but also rich with shared meaning, movement, and powerful symbolism.

As the program progressed into Term 2, students demonstrated an extraordinary level of commitment, attending extended morning rehearsals to refine their ideas and elevate their performance. Their focus, maturity, and mutual support were evident at every stage of the rehearsal process.

The final performance, held on Wednesday 2 July, was a true celebration of the student journey. Taking place in the Utzon Room at the Sydney Opera House, the event featured a heartfelt performance followed by a Q&A session. Students spoke candidly about the experience of creating original work, the challenges they overcame, and how the project had helped build their confidence and connection to others.

More than a performance, House Swap was an educational milestone, giving students the rare opportunity to co-create alongside professionals in one of the country’s most celebrated cultural institutions. It fostered deep learning, collaboration, and a genuine sense of achievement that will remain with them for years to come.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Sydney Opera House Creative Learning team, our incredible facilitators, and the staff, families, and school community who supported the project from beginning to end.

Above all, we thank our students for their honesty, their creativity, and their courage. You made this stage your own.
